May Half-Term at Cornwall’s Museums

Our friends at Visit Cornwall have pulled together a round up of the exciting activities happening at some of Cornwall’s best museums this May Half Term. Here are a few great suggestions – for the whole list hop over to their blog.

Falmouth Art Gallery, Falmouth

Head to Falmouth Art Gallery to see The Jerwood Drawing Prize, the exhibition runs until 4th June. The gallery has a doodle table with self-led activities and there are regular drop-in workshops every Saturday from 11am to 3pm. During half term children can also enjoy extra sessions on Thursday 2nd June where they’ll be Drawing with All Things Messy. On Friday 3rd June join musical whizz Roger Luxton and Jo Lumber to doodle and improvise with music, words and pictures in Doodling to Music.

Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro

Royal Cornwall Museum’s All Monsters Great and Small exhibition runs until the end of August. Head there to find out all about how monsters have played a part in human culture. You can also see the wonderful work of environmental artist Tony Plant – famous for his whole beach sand drawings. That exhibition is running until 30th June. There is a free art and craft messy Monday on 30th May and handling sessions at 11am and making at 12pm during the half term.

Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance

Penlee House Gallery & Museum in Penzance has free family drop-in workshops, every Saturday from 2.30pm – 3.30pm. Join them on Saturday 28th May to make 3D Landscapes inspired by the wonderful Fred Hall exhibition. On Tuesday 31st May Beano artist Nick Brennan will be running a workshop for children aged 7 to 13. Also inspired by Fred Hall’s work, Nick will show you how to draw funny faces of yourself and people you know. Booking is essential for that one – call the gallery on 01736 363625. Places are £4.50 each.

Wheal Martyn Museum and Country Park, St Austell

Looking for a day out with plenty of outdoor space? Wheal Martyn Museum and Country Park up your street. Set in 26 acres of woodland you can explore and enjoy Victorian clay works, vintage vehicles, nature trails, children’s adventure trail and much, much more. Enjoy Spring this half term with creative card making and vase designing with silk flowers and more.

National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Falmouth

May Half term at National Maritime Museum Cornwall kicks off with an Owl Encounters Super-Sized Weekend. Meet some amazing owls and work with the museum’s artist to create a giant owl and pussycat sculpture. The making area will be a buzz with boats, birds and beasts inspired by Edward Lear’s poem. On 31st May (11am, 12.30pm and 2pm) join in Story & Song in a musical rendition of the Owl and The Pussycat. Plus on Thursday 2nd June (at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm) meet the Norse men and women from the museum’s Viking Voyagers exhibition.
